We are sitting in a british/irish pub eating chips and drinking english tea! Much needed :) the irish owner, who has been here for 8 years, seems like quite a nice person. The food is about the cost of going to a wetherspoons in the uk- expensive for here- but he has to import everything- british sausage etc- so its actually good value. The customers however, well- we are surrounded by complete ex-pat idiots
Its really interesting because these people Have opted out of living in the west,
Yet they behave almost worse than they do at home: they have free reign over the people here simply because they are western-
So they take advantage of it by behaving like they have the right to lord over people- especially the women. There seems no genuine feeling for where they are, but maybe thats just me and my idealism
I dont know. Being here has been a rollercoaster of thoughts and emotions in a way i wasnt expecting.
The owner also told us about the extremes of wealth in cambodia. We have noticed a lot of brand new land rovers etc, and he was telling us that brand new vehocles are taxed an extra 50%- so brand new land rovers would cost about $180,000. He was saying that there is wealth comparable to any western country, although it seems unimaginable, it does exist- with the ruling class. Its an incredible disparity.
Later: we walked through some incredible markets today- one indoor local market, one touristy one, and the night market full of what you coul call middle class teens- all equally amazing!
More much later, we are just about to get on the bus to ho chi minh city!

I see you got your appetite's back...:o) xoox Mom
ReplyDeletewonderful adventure!
I went to a grim faded irish bar in Limassol last night with a eritraen refugee who is studying with a brother in the cong. I got on well with his and we agreed to meet up, terrible storys but an incredible man, i look forward to telling you about it. The pub was barely full though there were fat drunken expats who drowned down the karaoke mike, i wanted to get out but my refugee friend was enjoying the poor representation of life in the UK. Irish pubs the world over attract people like that...
