We are now in phnom penh in the cyclo
Hotel. After eating at the local restaurant last night weve both been pretty ill: i think i got 2 hrs sleep last night, and it hit hugo this morning. We had a 6.5 hour 'a/c' bus (it wasnt too bad, but not great, especially on the non paved bits) i think we wouldve been fine if we didnt feel so rough. We have been drinking lots of water but havent eaten anything today, and the already strong stench of dried fish and other quite penetrating smells has become heightened by an incredible amount- i think it was possibly the worst 6.5 hrs of our life as we didnt want to have to use the bus toilet ( i wont go into detail) so we didnt drink much and were trying to avoid being sick everywhere! :) lovely stuff! So now we are in phnom penh, the smell is really getting to us both but we are remaining positive and are just going to take the day tomorrow to relax and regroup. Our hotel is run by a french man so we hope to be able to
Get some
Croissants as spring rolls and stir fry may take awhile to build up to again!
The bus ride was interesting- seeing the lives of people in the countryside. I wouldnt say tht the general mood is negative, people seem to just go about life, but the conditons are filthier than you could imagine: but what is interesting is that it appears in their power to live more cleanly, they just dont- even the people who live in the nicer places seem to live in the same squalour. In the countryside, there is no work, so you see the majority of the people just sitting around, chatting, maybe helping their neighbours move something. They all sell the same
Things on the roadside, and in most places there are no tourists so there must be some transactions happening between them, even if it is just community. Today had been really difficult though, i wont lie. Ive fought being cross about the filth, and the smell is unbearable to me at the moment. I know that being ill makes us more intolerant, and im really fighting that.
Hopefully after a good sleep and some
Respite my outlook will be improved. We are okay though, and starting to be on the up.
