Taxi drivers are people who like to take shortcuts, that is what makes them good at their job. However, Taxi drivers in Hanoi completely change their mood when it rains. It is common for all the taxis in Hanoi to congregate at the major shopping centres on Ba Trieu, Trang Tien and Royal City in the hope of getting a journey that will earn them a 6km fare or more. In the rush, they ignore the jolly expat (not a term I like, but what else fits?) waving his arms in the rain and who is most likely to tip generously!
If you visit Hanoi and use a taxi: choose MaiLinh, Thang Cong or Thang Nga and spell out your route precisely and do the maths on the meter. Pay what is advertised and tip if the driver has used a half-pineapple airfreshener and hasn't farted just before you got in!
